Teryn was born and raised in Montgomery County, Maryland. She went to college at the Univeristy of Maryland, but fell in love with fitness long before that. She played a bunch of sports in high school including Field Hockey, Golf, and Lacrosse. Teryn began her journey in the fitness industry by teaching Pilates in high school for a small, local Pilates studio and found her passion for cycling in college. After she graduated, she began teaching cycling at Zengo Cycle in 2012 and the rest is history. She works at Zengo full time – teaching a full load of classes and training instructors for 5 local studios.
Ray grew up in Clark, NJ and moved to Maryland to play Lacrosse at the UMD. In high school, he played football and lacrosse, but found his love, passion, and talent for lacrosse exceeded football. Ray went on to be Division 1 Lacrosse All American. He was able to turn his love for lacrosse and fitness into a career, starting Performance Sport Systems in 2008. After years of hard work, the business grew. In 2014, Ray opened the facility we are in today, which includes CrossFit Hardshells, and indoor lacrosse and baseball training.
About Ray and Teryn as a couple:
Ray and Teryn started dating in 2009. Teryn met Ray when he was coaching her younger brother in lacrosse. 5 years later, on the same day as the Crossfit/Facility grand opening on November 15 th , 2014, Ray and Teryn got engaged. 15 months later, on February 13, 2016, they were married on a beautiful beach in Punta Cana, DR with 80 of their closest family and friends. They couple is coming up on their first anniversary!
How Teryn got into Crossfit:
“Ray was really into CrossFit when we were dating. He had always tried to get me to come in and try it, but I was pretty intimidated and always made excuses. After he opened up his own box, I decided to give it a try. I fell in love. It was all the things my body and mind needed, but I wouldn’t do on my own. I am not a fan of big gyms – I have a difficult time pushing myself when I am by myself. The community at the box is what does it for me. I am able to challenge myself with the support of the people around me. I am always physically and mentally challenged, it is the perfect compliment to all the cardio I do at Zengo. In fact, I think the cardio that I do has REALLY helped during the WODs. Most of the classes I teach at Zengo are early in the morning, so when I make it to the gym for a WOD, I feel like I don’t have much more energy to spare. But all the members are so motivating and supportive, they give me life! I still have a long way to go with my strength and form, but I will keep coming back because I thoroughly enjoy my time at the gym. It is FUN and that is the most important thing.”
